'Thin Man' Movies Set for DVD Release in August

The entire "Thin Man" film series from the 1930s and '40s is set to hit shelves in August via a DVD collection from Warner Home Video.

"The Complete Thin Man Collection" will include all six films in the screwball romantic comedy/mystery series, which starred William Powell and Myrna Loy as the detective team of Nick and Nora Charles -- a boozy but brilliant private detective and his rich, devil-may-care wife who stumble into various cases while trading quips with each other.

Along with the original 1934 film "The Thin Man," which was released on DVD by itself in late 2002, the collection features the DVD debuts of "After the Thin Man" (1936), "Another Thin Man" (1939), "Shadow of the Thin Man" (1941), "The Thin Man Goes Home" (1945) and "Song of the Thin Man" (1947). All of the titles have been digitally remastered.

The seven-disc set will include a bonus disc titled "Alias Nick & Nora," which includes the documentaries "William Powell: A True Gentleman" and "Myrna Loy: So Nice to Come Home To."

Other features in the set include classic comedy, mystery and musical shorts; two "Thin Man" radio dramas; and a 1957 episode from the "Thin Man" TV series based on the original characters starring Peter Lawford and Phyllis Kirk.

The collection is set for release Aug. 2 -- which would have been Loy's 100th birthday -- with a suggested retail price of $59.92. "The Thin Man" also will be available individually for $19.97.

WHV doesn't make its DVD sales figures available, but a spokeswoman did say the initial "Thin Man" DVD release was "well-received."

The company also noted in a release that "fans have been clamoring for the rest of the films in this series" since the original movie's DVD release.
