PG Movies Are Big Winners

Well how about this? Have you heard the latest news from the movie business?

For the first time in 20 years…movies with a PG-rating made more money at the box office last year than R-rated films.

Yes, that’s right…more family-friendly flicks were more popular. PG rated movies last year grossed $2.3 billion in the U.S. compared to $2.1 billion for R-rated films…this according to figures released this week by the people who should know…the National Association of Theatre Owners.

Interestingly…PG-13 movies did the most business with $4.4 billion. Five of 2004's top-10 moneymakers were rated PG, which means they were open to all audiences, among them "Shrek 2," "The Incredibles" and the latest Harry Potter movie.

Out of the top 25 movies in 2004, only four carried R ratings, which of course prohibit those younger than 17 from attending unless accompanied by an adult.

So what now? The head of the National Association of Theater owners says…"We want to call on our friends in the studios to continue this trend and to continue to distribute to us family titles, because that's where we sell more movie tickets."

Let’s hope they’re listening in Hollywood…and we do see more PG rated films.

Wouldn’t it be nice to go the movies and not have to put up with foul language, gratuitous violence and cheap sexual themes for a change?
